The Returning Lady /
17 - 19 March 2006 / NAFA Studio Theatre
This is the final play of Mr Yue Mei Qin’s “Trilogy of Women” series. In this play, the male and female leads remain the same. They are Zidong and Naichuan.
Both Zidong and Naichuan worked overseas (America and Singapore respectively) for more than 10 years, each with their own family and life stories. When they parted their relationship more than 10 years back, Naichuan was already pregnant with Zidong’s child and she did not abort the child. In America, she gave birth to a boy, whom she named OPEN. Naichuan’s husband passed away in an accident, leaving behind her to raise the child in a foreign land. After years of hard savings, she decided to return to Shanghai to start a business.
Zidong managed to find a job as a card dealer in a casino in America using his wits and talents. Through this job, he had the opportunity to meet different kinds of people. His marriage was on the rocks then due to the constant conflicts with his wife. Finally, they divorced. At the same time, China was undergoing major restructuring and opening up to foreign markets. Hence, Zidong decided to return to Shanghai.
Both Naichuan and Zidong returned to Shanghai after many years of living in a foreign land. Both of them met up again in a bar called “Travel Back Time”. Immediately, their love rekindles. Once again, their love story brings about empathy, sadness and memories.
Zidong took up his previous job in Shanghai, as a photographer. One day, as he was doing a shoot on board a helicopter, he met with an accident and died. Naichuan was devastated for she has once again lost her love one. On top of that, Zidong has not even met up with his own son, OPEN.
